Yonkers host winter coat drive for veterans
YONKERS, NY – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the launch of the City’s first-ever “Warm Winter for Veterans Clothing Drive.” The donation drive is aimed towards helping local veterans in hospitals and nursing homes this winter by collecting donated items such as winter coats, gloves, hats and scarves, among other accessories.
“We must never forget our veterans, no matter what their current situation may be,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Because of our veterans, we are able to cherish simple rights and freedoms that make America the greatest country in which to live. As we shop for loved ones the next few weeks and donate to local causes, I urge the residents of Yonkers to think of some of our local veterans who may be struggling during the holiday season.”
“I thank Mayor Spano for his support towards this new initiative,” said Lou Navarro, Director of Veterans Services. “Many local veterans are facing major financial challenges while frequenting VA hospitals and nursing homes. Through this donation drive, we are hoping to help as many veterans as possible.”
Through the Yonkers Office of Veterans Services, all donations collected will be distributed to local VA Hospitals, The Yonkers Salvation Army, Sans Souci Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, St. Joseph’s Nursing Home of Yonkers and Sprain Brook Manor Rehab. Suggested donations include coats, hats, gloves, scarves and sweaters.
Residents may donate at drop-off locations:
• Yonkers City Hall – 40 South Broadway
• Bajart American Legion Post 1122 – 840 McLean Avenue
• Empire VFW Post 375 – 10 Huber Place
• Department of Veterans Services – 120 New Main Street
• Police Precinct #1 – 730 East Grassy Sprain Road
