STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. Earlier today, I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds. And I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The only nuclear power plant in Massachusetts has increased security after two bombs exploded in Boston on Monday, killing at least two people and injuring dozens. The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, Mass., about 45 miles south of Boston, was already shut down for refueling when the explosions occurred.

Federal officials said Pilgrim has heightened checks of vehicles, materials individuals entering the plant and will take other steps as needed.

Restaurant Hunter "Signature Dish" Recipe: Spanakopita at The Greek Place in Garden City South

(Makes 5-6 servings)

To make filling:

- Take a cup of feta cheese and cut into 1/4-inch cubes, place on a plate.

- Take a quarter cup of cream cheese and cut into 1/4-inch cubes, add to the same plate.

- Add 4 ounces of pecorino romano cheese to the plate, set aside.

- Finely mince 5-6 stalks of fresh dill and between a half and a whole red onion, combine the two and continue to mince, then season with a dash of white pepper and sea salt.

Nassau County is inviting local residents to take part in a competition that allows artists to craft artwork recognizing the spirit of the County in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

800-pounds of Long Beach boardwalk will be repurposed as artwork for participants to use. The privately funded competition will offer more than 20-thousand-dollars in prizes to those artist who capture Nassau's response to the storm.

After a MRI, the New York Mets announced that star pitcher Johan Santana has a probable re-tear of his anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder. The injury may be season and career ending for Santana. Mets officials have said that surgery on the injured arm is "a strong possibility."

Santana suffered a similar injury to his pitching shoulder in 2010 that forced him to miss the entire 2011 season.

Restaurant Hunter "Signature Dish" Recipe: Cherry Garcia Stuffed French Toast at Maureen's Kitchen in Smithtown

(Recipe will yield approximately six servings)

- Coat the bottom of a large mixing bowl with 2-3 cans of cherry pie filling.

- Slice several bananas and add the banana slices to the large mixing bowl.

- Add a standard household bowl's worth of white chocolate chips to the large mixing bowl.

- Mix the white chocolate chips, bananas and cherry pie filling thoroughly.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders say they have an agreement on a state budget that would include raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour over three years.

The closed-door agreement announced Wednesday puts Albany on track to pass the third straight on-time budget.

The deal includes raising the minimum wage of $7.25.

The 2013-14 spending plan would increase state spending just under 2 percent, to about $136 billion. The total is almost $143 billion when federal aid for Superstorm Sandy recovery is included.

The nation’s first comprehensive energy/stimulant education and protection plan was approved overwhelmingly by the Suffolk County Legislature last night. After much discussion and debate, the Legislature approved Legislator Spencer’s resolutions that address the health risks associated with energy/stimulant drinks. This historic three-pronged approach includes:

Ø Prohibiting the marketing and advertising of stimulant drinks to minors.
Ø Prohibiting the distribution and sale of stimulant drinks to minors in County parks.

NEW YORK, NY– Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the National Park Service expects to reopen the Statue of Liberty to visitors by July 4, 2013, after repairing the extensive damage to Liberty Island caused by Hurricane Sandy.
