An abandoned backpack outside the Central Islip courthouse triggered an emergency response on Friday after a man had left it on the shrubbery. Nineteen-year-old Melvin Ruffin from Bellport said that when he was on a bus en route to the courthouse, a woman's chihuahua relieved itself on his book pack. Not wanting to go into the building with the scent of a dog, Ruffin decided to leave the backpack in the bushes.
