Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed into law the Safer Waterways Act. Under the new legislation, boat owners will be required to complete an approved boat safety course and to possess a safety certificate while boating. Also present at the Thursday signing on the Great South Bay was Lisa Gaines, the woman who lost her 7-year-old daughter Victoria on the Fourth of July boat accident in Oyster Bay. Gaines said she is pushing to get stricter boating safety measure passed on both the state and federal levels.
