MINEOLA — Nassau County officially downgraded the 5th Police Precinct in Elmont to a community policing center on Friday, as the county moves forward with the plan to cut the number of police precincts in half. Officials said the transition will keep the same 177 patrol cars on streets and will not hinder public safety. County officials estimate that the reduction in police precincts will save Nassau $20 million per year.
