EAST HAMPTON — Craig Schum's quick thinking and courage played a key role in saving the life of a woman Sunday when he decided to run towards the site of a fiery plane crash. According to the witness, the woman — identified as Kim Brillo, was covered in blood and appeared to be dead. Sources say Schum helped the victim to safety as authorities and response units rushed to the scene.

Police say the August 26 crash happened moments after the small plane left East Hampton Airport. The pilot, 51-year-old Steven Bochter, and his passenger, Kim Brillo, were airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital following the accident with non-life threatening injuries, authorities say. Investigators believe a mechanical problem may have caused the plane to crash.
