A new report from the Centers for Disease Control indicates that suicide among 10- to 24-year-olds is on the rise. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens in New York and attempted suicide incidents for 15- to 19-year olds more than doubled between 2007 and 2010 on Long Island.

Often, the subject is still taboo. "They don't really talk about in class or anything... they don't really educate you on it," says Alicia Carlson, a student who was once put on suicide watch. Carlson was lucky to receive help for the family problems she was struggling with.

Risk factors for suicide include family history, alcohol or drug abuse or stressful life events. Experts at the Long Island Crisis Center offer support through a 24-7 phone line or text messages.
