Tens of thousands of young undocumented immigrants gathered across the county for the chance to apply for deportation deferrals that include work permits. 1.7 million people nationwide are eligible to apply for the permits, with an estimated 40,000 people eligible in New Jersey alone. Lawmakers from across the region say the program is an important opportunity for immigrants to change their legal status.

In order to be accepted, applicants must have come to the U.S. before their 16th birthday, resided in the U.S. since 2007, be under 31 years of age and currently be in school or have graduated from high school, or be a military veteran.
