RIVERHEAD — While some businesses across the island are struggling to stay alive, local farm Wells Homestead Acres has managed to keep a steady grow since the 17th century. Under the supervision of owner Lyle Wells, the farm grows a number of vegetables - including zucchini, asparagus and squash, and customers include large local retailers like Stop & Shop and FreshDirect.

Wells, who remembers going to farm auctions as a child, says land is no longer affordable in Suffolk County and has been forced to lease instead. The demand for his product keeps growing in the area and his 175 acres is not longer big enough. Despite the spike in property prices, Lyle Wells has no plans of slowing down.
