MINEOLA — A new bill approved by the senate could help commuters with hundreds of dollars in tax breaks. According to New York State officials, the bill could give money back to commuters in unexpired federal tax breaks. Currently, only $120 a month is tax free to commuters who use public transportation. If the new bill is signed into law, commuters can claim up to $230 in public transportation tax deductions. Drivers who use personal vehicles for commuting can claim up to $240, officials said.

The bill, which was proposed by Senator Charles Schumer, would cost the state about $271 million.
