POINT LOOKOUT — Prosecutors with Nassau County police announced they will not file charges against an officer who shot and killed a man in August 2011. Police said Kurt Doerbecker, 23, was shot outside his home after wielding a knife at an officer who approached him about a suspected burglary. They insist police tried to calm the victim down numerous times before shooting him in the head as he climbed out of the back window. District Attorney Kathleen Rice said after a thorough investigation authorities felt the shooting was justified.

Doerbecker's family has filed a federal lawsuit claiming police were not properly trained to take action.
