MEDFORD — Tuesday marks the somber one-year anniversary of the shooting at Haven Drugs. Exactly one year ago, David Laffer walked inside the pharmacy looking for prescription medication and fatally shot four people before walking out with thousands of pills. The victims were employees Raymond Ferguson, 45, of Centereach, and Jennifer Mejia, 17, of East Patchogue, and customers Bryon Sheffield, 71, of Medford, and Jamie Taccetta, 33, of Farmingville. Laffer pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison. His wife, Melinda Brady, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for driving the getaway car. In the year since, state lawmakers passed a law that will help control the monitoring of prescription drugs.
