President Obama announced a policy change regarding immigration in a press conference Friday, referring to the move as a "stopgap" and calling on congress to act in passing the DREAM Act. Effective immediately, eligible individuals who are not considered a risk to national security or public safety will be able to request temporary relief from deportation proceedings and apply for work authorization.

Obama invoked the image of young people who are often unaware that they are undocumented until they apply for a scholarship, driver's license or job. The DREAM Act would allow people who have been in the country for 5 years and are willing to go to college or serve in the military to eventually earn citizenship.
