New York City officials presided over a memorial ceremony on Tuesday that paid tribute to 13 officers who died of illnesses developed after working at Ground Zero as well as two NYPD officers from Long Island who were killed in the line of duty. Among the honorees were Detective Peter Figoski from West Babylon, who was fatally shot in December 2011 while responding to a home invasion in Brooklyn, and Alain Schaberger, who died after responding to a domestic violence call in Brooklyn in March 2011. The families of both officers said the ceremony brought them pride but also helped them mourn their lost loved ones.
