BRENTWOOD — Cheryl Echevarria of Brentwood is blind but she loves to travel. She relies on her service dog, Maxx, to help and she has the confidence that comes from traveling often. Born with Type 1 diabetes, Echevarria was 22 when she was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease that causes blindness. She proceeded to enroll in a training program provided by the New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped and learned new job skills. In 2009, Echevarria and her husband, Nelson, founded Echevarria Travel. The agency specializes in travelers who are blind, on dialysis, in wheelchairs, or those who have had an organ transplant. “What I want to be is myself and help as many people as I can,” said Echevarria.
