Pedro Hernandez Reportedly Under Suicide Watch
NEW YORK CITY — Pedro Hernandez, the man who police said confessed to the murder of Etan Patz, was arraigned Friday via web camera. Officials said Hernandez's court-appointed attorney did not ask for an appeal but told the judge that his client is mentally ill with a history of hallucinations. Hernandez was arraigned via video from Bellvue Hospital, where he is reportedly under suicide watch after threatening to take his own life.
According to authorities, Hernandez admitted to luring Etan on May 25, 1979 to a SoHo convenience store basement, where he allegedly strangled the boy to death and later placed his body in a plastic bag.
