LONG ISLAND — Riders on the Long Island Rail Road will have to sober up before they head home. Starting Friday morning, all weekend overnight trains leaving from New York Penn Station will be alcohol free, regardless of whether it's in an open or closed container. The LIRR says the ban, which was announced last month, is being put in place to protect the safety of their workers.

The ban, part of an indefinite pilot program, affects all trains leaving between midnight and 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
