HAUPPAUGE — Following Executive Steve Bellone's first State of the County Address, county officials are beginning to take action to reduce the county's $500 million budget gap. Legislators are expected to announce a proposal that will ask non-union employees to start contributing to their healthcare plans in order to avoid cuts. The Suffolk County PBA president said police layoffs have been avoided for now because 74 officers agreed to take early retirements in July.
