Michael Hervey, Chief Operating Officer of the Long Island Power Authority tendered his resignation to be effective at the end of the year, according to a statement from Chairman Howard E. Steinberg. Hervey worked for the utility for 12 years and took on the responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in 2010. Hervey's resignation comes amid anger and criticism from residents and local officials of LIPA's performance during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Supervisor Tom Croci has declared a State of Emergency for Town of Islip. Croci has directed the evacuation of all Town of Islip communities located on Fire Island to be completed by no later than 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

WESTHAMPTON — Two men are confirmed dead in a small airplane that crashed and sank into the Moriches Inlet Saturday, according to reports. The U.S. Coast Guard reportedly said that the the bodies of the two men were recovered from the plane. The aircraft, which was under as much as 30 feet of water, is being taken to the Suffolk police impound unit in Westhampton, sources said. The cause of the crash is being investigated.

He was rushed from the Nassau County Legislature to Winthrop Hospital earlier today.

Emergency and rescue workers are responding to the scene of a small plane crash near East Hampton Airport. There is no word at this time on how many people may have been aboard the plane, or the extent of any injuries.

CINCINNATI — Various media reports are saying that former astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died. Armstrong's family told the Associated Press that the 82-year-old died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

SHIRLEY — A small plane crashed Sunday morning in Shirley and killed one person, according to Suffolk County police. An unknown number of people suffered burn injuries, sources said. The crash occurred at about 11:55 a.m. near Helene Avenue, police said. Officials did not have information immediately available about the number of people involved in the crash.

Police confirmed that an unknown number of people were taken to a hospital with burns, but sources could not say whether they had been in the plane or on the ground.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — At least one law enforcement officer and one civilian have been killed in a shooting near Texas A&M University's campus on Monday, according to reports. The gunman was also shot before being taken into custody, sources said. The officer killed was a constable with Brazos County, officials said. Media sources are reporting that a College Station police officer and another woman were also injured in the shooting.

At least seven people, including an alleged gunman, are dead after a shooting at a Sikh temple in the suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, according to reports. Sources say a police officer shot and killed the alleged gunman after the suspect shot and wounded the officer. Reports state that investigators who went through the building after the shooting found four bodies inside the temple and two outside the building. At least three wounded were taken to a local hospital, according to reports.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The suspect accused of carrying out a mass shooting in an Aurora movie theater was formally charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder Monday morning.

According to prosecutors, 24-year-old James Holmes walked into the midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” on June 20 and opened fire. Police say 12 people died in the shooting and 58 were injured.

According to earlier reports, the suspect is being held in solitary confinement. At the request of the defense, District Chief Judge William Sylvester barred video taping of the hearing.
