Rutgers’ University's bold new move into the Big Ten will come with bold new leadership – with a woman running the athletic department for the first time in school history.

Julie Hermann, most recently the No. 2 athletic administrator at Louisville, has been named the school’s new athletic director -- making her one of just three women at a BCS program to currently hold the athletic department’'s top position (N.C. State’s Debbie Yow and California’s Sandy Barbour are the others), according to two people familiar with the process.

TRENTON, N.J. — A standoff with an armed man who took multiple hostages inside a Trenton home has ended, and three children are safe, police said early Sunday. According to the Associated Press, word of the confrontation's conclusion came a short while after the standoff, which had had prompted the evacuation of nearby homes, entered its third day.

"The Trenton hostage situation is resolved, the three children are safe, and the area is secure," state police Sgt. Adam Grossman told the Associated Press, delivering a joint statement also from Trenton police and county prosecutors.

The Vatican has confirmed the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI effective February 28.

Vatican officials say the pope announced that due his deteriorating strength "I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

The 85-year-old pope was appointed the head of the Catholic Church in 2005 at the age of 78. The 265th pope to serve the church, Pope Benedict was one of the oldest new elected popes.

The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415.

According to media reports, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch died Friday morning after being admitted to intensive care Thursday afternoon. Doctors at New York-Presbyterian Hospital's say the Democrat was being closely monitored overnight but succumbed to congestive heart failure. He was 88 years old.

The decorated politician is credited with saving New York City from financial ruin during his years as mayor from 1978 to 1989. In 2011, Koch became a steel fixture in Manhattan when the Queensboro Bridge was renamed in his honor.

Service is suspended in both directions east of Mineola on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches, because of a broken LIPA utility pole leaning on electrical lines west of Hicksville Station. LIPA anticipates to complete the work by 1:30 p.m. Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma trains are being combined and departing from Penn Station on the Ronkonkoma Branch trains' time. These trains are being routed to Babylon, where customers will transfer for diesel train shuttle service to Hicksville.

Both East and Westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway are shut down at Exit 68 in Shirley at this hour after a reported multiple vehicle crash. Suffolk County Police says a call came in around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday. A tractor-trailer was involved in the accident, with many injuries reported at the scene. There's no status on the nature of the injuries. Authorities are encouraging commuters heading out East to use alternative routes Wednesday evening.

Connecticut State Police released Saturday the names of the 26 victims gunned down in the Newtown school shooting. Of the 20 children killed in the massacre, eight were boys and the remaining 12 were girls. Four children were born in 2005, making them age seven, with the remaining six-year-old victims having been born in 2006. The remaining six victims were all adult women.

1. Charlotte Bacon, female. Date of birth, Feb. 22, 2006 (age 6)

2. Daniel Barden, male. Date of birth, Sept. 25, 2005 (age 7)

3. Rachel Davino, female. Date of birth, July 17, 1983 (age 29)

Officials say a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Japan prompting an early tsunami warning. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake struck off the coast of Miyagi - the same region hit by a massive earthquake in March of 2011, Friday shortly after 5 p.m. (3 a.m. local time). No are no deaths reported at this time and the tsunami warning has been lifted across the nation. Still, anyone living near the coast of the Pacific is urged to leave the area for higher grounds.
