We have come a long way since the first Earth Day in 1970. Many advancements have been made in recycling, fuel consumption, and reducing our carbon footprint on the Earth. It wasn't too long ago that most Americans were cruising the streets in cars with gas-guzzling V-6 engines.

But not in the way you may think, or at least not involving Kevin Costner and humans having gills!

Well we've been discussing the effect the coastal waters have on Long Island's weather in spring. One benefit the cooler waters provide is a bit of protection from severe thunderstorms.

As bad as the weather was on Long Island Saturday evening with heavy rain and 50 MPH wind gusts, it was worse in the midwest and southeast. There, tornadic thunderstorms wreaked havoc leaving miles of destruction. Fortunately for us, severe thunderstorms usually use warm, moist air as fuel. As those storms moved toward Long Island, they ran into the marine-cooled air and weakened.

Ever wonder why big cities are generally warmer than there surrounding areas? The cause is fairly simple, but the effects can be vast and expensive. As urban areas develop, changes occur in their landscape. Fixed structures, pavement, and city infrastructure replace the normal open land and plants. Ground that was once permeable and moist soil now requires drainage and heats up much quicker as a solid pavement. Secondary effects are caused by large amounts of people, cars, and pollution.

Jimmy Buffett may have had it right when he came up with the name for his hit 1977 album called 'Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude.' A 2009 study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention rated the happiest states in America, and a huge contributing factor seems to be the sun. The top five happiest states are Louisiana, Hawaii, Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona. In comparison, our home region did not fair quite as well. New York ranked dead last and New Jersey ranked 47th.

April showers and more are expected for tonight. Heavy rain at times and high winds throughout Long Island. Winds could gust up to 50 mph. Along with strong winds, we can count on high surf. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for this evening with moderate flooding, especially on the North Shore. Tides expected 1 to 2 feet above normal. Surf of 7 to 9 feet can be expected.

One thing we can count on during spring on Long Island is changeable weather. This weekend will be no exception.

We are starting the weekend this Friday evening with a few patchy clouds and cool temperatures. But don't worry if you have Friday evening plans, you won't need anything more than a light jacket as we won't be experiencing any rain tonight.

The northwest wind did its job today on Long Island and reminded us how beautiful a spring day can be. Low cloud cover hung tough through parts of the morning, but by late morning the clouds broke up and the strong April sun went to work. High temperatures soared into the mid 60s, even along the south shore beaches. Low humidity and a steady breeze added to the comfortable feel of the day.

Look for more sunshine heading into Friday. But you guessed it, a wind shift out of the northeast will bring cooler temperatures. About 10 degrees cooler to be exact, we'll see highs in the mid 50s.

Outdoor activities during the spring and summer time can be some of our most memorable moments. But the token spoiler..."Thunder & Lightning" can ruin everything! So it's probably not a bad idea to know a little bit about thunder and lightning. A common misconception is that thunder is a separate element than lightning. But this is not true. In fact, they are one and the same.

As I discussed yesterday, being surrounded by the coastal waters in spring has a profound effect on Long Island weather. Buoy 44025, which is located about 30 miles south of Fire Island, is reporting a water temperature of 43 degrees.
