Humidity increased quite a bit today across Long Island as a southerly breeze took over. Dewpoints climbed through the 60's and are hovering near the 70 degree mark, which is a very uncomfortable level. With the humidity in place and a slow-moving cold front heading our way, scattered thunderstorms will be possible over the next 24 to 36 hours. Most of the storms today have been confined to areas just north and west of Long Island. But as we move through the evening a few storms will be possible.

The rain has finally come to an end! Over 10 inches of rain in total fell across parts of Long Island from this past weekend through yesterday. Today the sunshine returns and the temperatures spike back into the 80's. Unfortunately the dry weather is short lived, showers and storms return Thursday evening and Friday.

We are kicking the weekend off in fine style across Long Island this Friday evening. The weather is picture perfect with clear skies, light winds, low humidity, and comfortably mild temperatures. We'll enjoy another comfortably cool night tonight as temperatures will fall into the 50's in many areas.
Saturday will be gorgeous again with sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid 80's during the afternoon. Humidity will increase, so it will certainly feel warmer than it has over the past 48 hours. But overall, Saturday will be the best day of the weekend for outdoor plans.

We enjoyed a great day across Long Island with sunny skies and low humidity. A refreshing northwesterly wind added to the comfortable feel of the day. Heading into tonight, we will enjoy one of the coolest nights we have had in quite some time. Low temperatures will be in the 50's across most of Long Island. Friday will be another great day with sunny skies, low humidity, and highs in the low 80's. The weekend will feature increasing humidity, so get out and enjoy the wonderful weather on Friday!

At Islip MacArthur Airport, this past July was the 3rd hottest on record. The average temperature, which takes into account both the afternoon highs and morning lows, was 77.6 degrees. Normally, our average temperature in July is 74.1 degrees so we were 3.5 degrees above average for the month. The record for the hottest July was set in 1999 when the average temperature was 78.6 degrees.

Extreme heat and humidity have been the norm over the past week or so, but will it continue? The trend so far would lean towards yes. Here is why...If you compare 2011 so far to past years we have already left some of them in the dust. At the recording station in Islip we have seen 9 days so far this year above 90 degrees, and keep in mind we haven't reached August yet. Now if you take that number and compare it to 6 total days above 90 degrees in 2008, and 3 total days in 2009 you can get an idea of how hot it has been.
