Mets World Series champions spread awareness about obesity, promote healthy lifestyles

LYNBROOK – The Town of Hempstead and the Village of Lynbrook partnered with two players from the historic 1969 Mets team on Thursday to spread awareness about obesity and promote a healthy lifestyle for senior citizens.

The 1969 World Series champions, Mets outfielder Art Shamsky and First Baseman Ed Kranepool are both senior citizens. Kranepool suffers from diabetes himself and is in need of a kidney transplant.

Tennis fans head to Queens for day 1 of US Open

QUEENS — Thousands of fans braved the heat and humidity at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for day one of the U.S Open on Monday.

At 13 years old, Seth Vieira of New Windsor dreams of one day competing in the U.S. Open, but for now, watching some of his favorite tennis players hard at work is just as exciting.

“It’s really a great game because it’s a little bit of everything. It takes concentration. It’s not just about hitting the ball hard. It’s about mental toughness and all those things,” Vieira says.

Saints acquire QB Teddy Bridgewater from Jets

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have agreed to acquire veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and a sixth-round pick from the New York Jets for a third-round draft pick on Wednesday.

While record-setting quarterback Drew Brees is entrenched as New Orleans’ starter, the move signifies that Saints coach Sean Payton was not entirely comfortable with either veteran Tom Savage or second-year pro Taysom Hill serving as Brees’ backup.
