Comsewogue- 29
Half Hollow Hills West- 31

The defending Long Island Class III champion Half Hollow Hills West Colts (1-0) survived a thrilling game on opening day of the Suffolk Division 3 football season to defeat the Comsewogue Warriors (0-1) by a score of 31-29 at Half Hollow Hills HS West in Dix Hills, NY. Both teams got off to a great start with touchdowns on their opening drives to even the game at 7. After Comsewogue made the score 21-13 early in the 3rd quarter, sophomore running back Dakim Griffin tied the game with a huge 96-yard TD run, followed by a 2-point conversion to even the score at 21. Returning Cipp Award winner for Suffolk’s top running back senior Justin Brown, who scored two touchdowns already in the game, broke a big run for a score with just over 4 minutes remaining to give Hills West their first lead of the game at 28-21. Following a clutch FG by Hills West senior Matthew Mendel to end the 3rd quarter, Comsewogue would have a chance to tie the game late. Junior QB Brady Shannon, who came into the game when starting QB Matt Sainsbury left due to an injury, threw a 43-yard touchdown pass on his first play to Anthony Cambria to make the score 31-29. However, Hills West defense came up big on the tying two-point conversion, led by senior Joey Venezia, forcing Shannon to throw a bad pass and preserving the victory.
